It is currently 8 AM in Melbourne and I have been up for 4 freakin’ hours. Yep, I am one of those crazy people who goes to the Anzac Day* Dawn Service.
If you don’t live in Australia or New Zealand, Anzac Day is the day everyone remembers the wars and the veterans and anyone who has ever fought in a war. And a day when you have the choice to wake up EXTREMELY early to freeze to death outside a shrine.
My mother and I wake up at around 5 AM every April 25th and go down the road to the Shrine of Remembrance. We have a standing joke that walking with everyone towards a shrine makes us feel like we’re in a cult.
After the songs and the speeches, we all go and have the Gunfire Breakfast. This is a meal of bread, sausages, baked beans and scrambled “eggs”. It could possibly be defined as one of the most disgusting meals I will ever eat, though that does not and has not ever stopped me and my mother eating it every single year.
We sadly turned down the tea, coffee and Anzac biscuits** offered and went home instead, which is where I am now. My mother is lucky enough to be in bed fast asleep. I however have to go out and do things today. Meaning: I HAVE TO STAY AWAKE!!! Its not fair….
Anyway, I hope that everyone has a good Anzac Day.

**These biscuits are the most delicious biscuits ever. They were created so that you could survive on them for days on end. And they’re chewy and crunchy and awesome and I am going to stop now…
